What Does Epidural Lipomatosis Mean on a Spine MRI?
Short answer: epidural lipomatosis means extra fatty tissue is described in the spinal canal area. It may be incidental, or it may contribute to crowding around nerves when narrowing is significant.
What the wording usually describes
Reports may mention epidural lipomatosis with canal stenosis, degenerative changes, or nerve crowding. The term does not automatically explain pain; clinicians compare the MRI level with walking tolerance, leg symptoms, neurologic exam findings, medication history, and other risk factors.
Details that make the finding more or less important
- whether the report calls the narrowing mild, moderate, or severe
- which spinal levels are involved
- whether symptoms worsen with standing or walking and improve with sitting
- whether leg numbness, weakness, balance change, or bowel/bladder symptoms are present
- whether other findings such as disc bulge, facet arthropathy, or ligament thickening are also present
How to discuss it at a pain visit
Ask whether the finding is likely incidental or part of the reason nerves may be crowded. Urgent neurologic symptoms should be reviewed promptly rather than handled as a routine imaging question.
